Are you looking to hire a fitness copywriter to take care of all the content on your business website?

A good fitness copywriter can help you create engaging and effective content that will help you hook your target audience.

But you may be wondering what questions you should ask before making your decision.

It’s important to make sure that the writer you choose has the necessary experience and knowledge to create that engaging content for your business.

In this blog post, I’ll discuss good interview questions to ask a copywriter. I’ll also provide tips for finding the best copywriter for your business.

10 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Copywriter

What questions should I ask when hiring a fitness copywriter?

Well, there are many questions you can ask, but I’ve identified the six that are most important to help you find the right person for your fitness business.

These questions are based on my experience with clients, and I believe they provide the most useful information for you to be able to make a decision on who to hire.

1.     What is your fitness writing experience, and can you provide examples of your work?

When you’re looking for a fitness copywriter, it’s important to make sure that they have experience writing about fitness topics.

Ask the writer to provide examples of their work so you can see how they write about this topic.

When reviewing the writer’s work, be sure to pay attention to the tone and style of the writing.

Ask yourself: Is it engaging and informative? Or does it read like a dry scientific journal?

The best fitness copywriters will be able to write in an engaging and informative style that will appeal to your target audience.

If you’re not sure if the writer’s experience is a good fit for your business, ask them questions about their experience and what they can bring to the table.

They may be able to provide additional examples of their work or talk about how they would approach writing for your business.

If the writer has limited experience writing about fitness, they may not be the best choice for your business. However, that doesn’t mean they should automatically be tossed aside.

A good fitness copywriter doesn’t have to be an expert on everything related to fitness. They just need to have a solid foundation of experience writing about fitness topics and know how to research and gather information.

If you have a writer who is new to writing fitness but eager in their research and learning, chances are, that writer will work extra hard to prove themselves.

Just by aware that if you’re hiring a writer who is new to fitness, there will be a learning curve. You may have to guide the writers in terms of accuracy of content and your brand’s style.

2.     Do you have any personal experience with fitness or nutrition, and are you familiar with the latest trends in the industry?

Copywriters who have personal experience with fitness or nutrition can be a valuable asset for your business. They understand the topic from a first-hand perspective and can provide insights that other writers may not know about.

In addition, they are familiar with the latest trends in the industry and know what types of content are popular among readers. This information can help them create content that is relevant and engaging for your target audience.

As an example, I’ve been in the fitness industry for well over a decade. I’m a certified personal trainer with several other certifications including performance enhancement specialist and fitness nutrition specialist.

I’ve worked with clients of all types – from bodybuilding to aged care – and I’ve trained in gyms all over the world as a traveling personal trainer.

When I create content for clients, it’s based on academic knowledge and the latest science but more from direct experience in the industry.

This allows me to provide clients with an edge that they wouldn’t get with other writers.

Calling back to the question above, if the writer doesn’t have direct personal experience with fitness or nutrition, they should at least be familiar with the topic and know how to research it.

They should also be up to date on the latest trends in the industry so they can write about them in their content.

3.     Can you describe your writing process?

The writer you hire should be able to completely outline their process for every project from start to finish.

Before you hire a copywriter for your fitness website, you need to feel confident that you know what to expect from the fitness writer.

For example, when I jump on a discovery call with prospective clients, I always break down exactly what they can expect.

I describe my outlining, drafting, and feedback processes, and I assure the client that there will be constant contact and frequent updates from me.

This information can help ease worry and allow you to relax so that you can focus on running your business while the writer is taking care of your content.

If the writer says they wing it or don’t have a process, I’d recommend looking elsewhere.

4.     How will you engage my target audience? What kinds of words would resonate with them most strongly?

Copywriters who are familiar with the target audience for a fitness brand or website can be a valuable asset.

They understand what words and phrases resonate with readers and know how to write content that appeals to them.

In addition, they can help you develop an understanding of your target audience so you can better reach them with your marketing messages.

If the writer doesn’t have a lot of experience with your target audience, that’s not necessarily a reason to throw in the towel on that person. But they better have incredible research skills, or a lot of firsthand experience in the fitness industry.

5.     How do you optimize content for search engines?

Being able to speak about fitness topics in a reader-friendly way isn’t enough anymore. All content that a writer creates should be optimized for search engines.

This involves using the right keywords and making sure that all content is reader-friendly so it can rank well in search engine results.

A writer who understands how to optimize copy for search engines will help improve your site’s rankings, which can lead to higher traffic levels.

And naturally, more traffic will significantly increase the potential for sales.

A side question to ask in relation to this one: Which SEO tools do you use to optimize content?

If the writer doesn’t have one, that’s a bad sign.

Popular SEO tools include Google Ads, SEMRush, and Keysearch.

6.     What measurable results have you produced for clients?

This is the “put your money where your mouth is” question.

Successful copywriters should be able to speak to tangible results that they’ve produced or helped their client achieve.

For example, the writer could tell you about the percentage of the increase in traffic to a client’s website after writing content for them for several months.

Another example would be the positive feedback and testimonials provided to a client about a fitness e-book that the writer created.

Long story short: If the writer has been in the industry for a while, they should be able to show positive results from their work.

7.     Are you comfortable working with deadlines, and how quickly can you turnaround content once it’s been assigned to you?

Most good fitness copywriters are comfortable working with deadlines and can turnaround content relatively quickly, depending on the amount of work that’s required.

This is important, especially if you have a lot of content that needs to be written on a regular basis.

For example, blogging best practice says that you want to be posting at least once per week, and your posts should be no less than 1,500 words.

If the writer isn’t comfortable working with deadlines or can’t turnaround content quickly, this may not be the best fit for your business, especially if you’re serious about a consistent posting schedule.

Hint: Google and other search engines like when you post consistently, and your website sees the benefits of that as it climbs the ranks.

8.     What kind of tone do you think is appropriate for a fitness blog or website?

When it comes to tone, there is no right or wrong answer – it all depends on what you are looking for.

But with that said, the fitness copywriter should have a good idea of what would work best for your brand and target market.

Some businesses may want an upbeat and positive tone, while others may prefer a more realistic and down-to-earth approach.

It’s important to discuss this with the writer before hiring them so they have an idea of the tone you are looking for. This will help them ensure that their writing is aligned with your brand and style.

If you’re not sure what tone you want, ask the writer to provide some examples of their work in both tones. This will give you a better idea of which tone may be a good fit for your business.

9.     Do you have any other skills or areas of expertise that could be beneficial to a fitness brand or website?

Many fitness copywriters also have other skills or areas of expertise that could be beneficial to a fitness brand or website.

For example, many writers are familiar with social media marketing and can help you develop a social media strategy.

Other writers may have graphic design skills and can create graphics for your website or social media profiles.

It’s important to discuss this with the writer before hiring them so you can see if they have any skills or areas of expertise that could be beneficial to your business. This will help you determine if they would be a good fit for your team.

If you’re looking for a fitness copywriter, be sure to ask these questions! By doing so, you can ensure that you’re hiring a writer who is a good fit for your business and understands your target audience.

10. What’s the last certification or course you took? What were the main points you learned?

Continuing education should be a non-negotiable for you.

You want a writer who is constantly improving their skills as both a copywriter and as a fitness industry expert.

A professional copywriter who is worth his salt will take new courses and read the latest books every year. This is a requirement because the industry is always changing.

When you hire a fitness writer who is constantly learning and improving, your business will benefit because your content will be always at the forefront of what’s trending.

And I can’t say this enough: If you have great content that’s engaging, optimized for search engines, and pulling in plenty of traffic, you’re more than likely going to see a giant jump in sales and profit.
